The Necessity of Repentance
In Luke 13:1-9, we looked at the story of the barren fig tree and Jesus’ instruction that repentance is a necessity for everyone. Repentance is not just the beginning of faith, but the very road that we are on as we draw closer to the Lord. It is not solely turning away from sin, but more importantly, turning to God the Father.
Jesus is the caretaker in the story, interceding and doing the work on our behalf to produce good fruit by the power of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. So that we cannot only turn towards the Father when we sin, but we also get to turn towards the Father, even in times of blessing. Knowing that we do not deserve it, we get to respond with a heart of gratitude. Jesus is the only one who can make it “well and good” on our behalf.
