Grace Table

Repentance & Renewal

Feb 15, 2026    Josh Duncan

In Ezra 8, Ezra gathers a faithful remnant of Israelites to return from exile in Babylon to Jerusalem. Before the dangerous journey, he proclaims a fast at the river Ahava, humbling the people to seek God’s protection rather than relying on a military escort from the Persian king. The Lord answers their prayer, preserves them on the journey, and brings them safely to Jerusalem with the treasures for the temple. This chapter shows that God preserves a redeemed people not by worldly strength, but by grace received through humble dependence. Just as Ezra trusted God to guard the exiles and their treasure, Christ secures and brings His people safely home, not by human power, but by His redeeming work. The journey from exile to Jerusalem foreshadows the greater rescue Jesus accomplishes, leading His people out of spiritual exile and safely into the presence of God.
